New Steam MMORPG Is Free to Play, But There’s a Catch

A brand-new MMORPG just hit Steam, and it’s already stirring up quite a bit of controversy. Sword of Justice, a free-to-play fantasy MMO developed by ZhuRong Studio, promised a massive open world, beautiful visuals, and a no pay-to-win experience. On paper, it sounded like the kind of game MMORPG fans have been waiting for. But just a few days after launch, things aren’t looking so heroic.

Sword of Justice Launches With Mixed Reception

After years of hype and a well-received closed beta, Sword of Justice officially launched on Steam on November 5, with global servers opening two days later. Players were quick to dive in — and even quicker to share their thoughts.

At the time of writing, the game sits at roughly 49% negative reviews on Steam, making its reception decidedly mixed. Many players agree that the game’s world looks gorgeous, but that’s where the praise often stops. The most common complaint? That Sword of Justice feels like a mobile port, not a PC-first experience.

One frustrated player summed it up bluntly: “It’s just the mobile version of Justice Online ported to PC and renamed.”

Players Criticize Optimization and Progression

Beyond performance concerns, another sticking point for players is the time-gated progression. Activities that limit how much progress you can make each day have drawn criticism from fans hoping for a more traditional, grind-at-your-own-pace MMO. Some have also mentioned clunky controls and lackluster optimization that make the game feel unfinished on PC.

The sentiment isn’t much better on mobile, either. On Google Play, Sword of Justice currently holds an average rating of 2.9, while the App Store version fares slightly better with a 3.9. So far, developer ZhuRong Studio has stayed quiet about the backlash, leaving players wondering whether major updates or fixes are on the horizon.

Not Everyone Is Unhappy

Despite the criticism, not all feedback has been negative. Many players have praised Sword of Justice’s world design, calling it one of the most visually stunning free MMORPGs on Steam. Others appreciate its casual-friendly approach, noting that while progression is limited, the game doesn’t pressure players with aggressive monetization or daily login demands.

The developers have also shared some impressive early stats — the game has reportedly surpassed 40 million downloads across Asia and racked up millions of pre-registrations in the West before launch. Clearly, the interest is there.

The Road Ahead for Sword of Justice

It’s still early days for Sword of Justice. With a massive player base already in place, ZhuRong Studio has the potential to turn things around — if they can address optimization issues and tweak the progression systems that are frustrating early adopters.

For now, Sword of Justice remains a free-to-play MMORPG worth keeping an eye on, but one that comes with a few big caveats. If you’re curious, it’s available right now on Steam, Android, and iOS — just don’t expect a completely polished experience yet.
