Hey, Daily Quest readers.
Crimson Desert has been out for a few days now, and opinions are all over the map. Some love it, some hate it, some are confused by it. But there's one thing the community has collectively agreed on: Kliff is an absolutely terrible protagonist.
The Most Forgettable Main Character In Recent Memory
Even before launch, there were concerns that Crimson Desert's obsession with cramming in every gameplay mechanic imaginable would come at the cost of a focused narrative. Now that the game is out, those fears have been confirmed — and Kliff is the biggest casualty.
Despite being the central figure in the story, Kliff has essentially zero personality. He doesn't react to major events, shows no emotional depth, and pretty much exists to shuffle from quest to quest like a delivery drone with a sword.
Over on the Crimson Desert subreddit, the feedback has been brutal:
- Players are calling him "one of the worst AAA MCs in gaming history"
- Multiple posts describe him as having "zero soul" and no motivation
- One player pointed out that Kliff doesn't even react to his own death and revival at the start of the game
- Another said his only personality trait is "helping people"
To be fair, a handful of players think he's "not that bad" — but that's hardly a ringing endorsement for the face of a massive AAA RPG.
Should Kliff Have Been A Custom Character?
The general consensus is clear: if Kliff is going to be this passive and emotionally detached, he should have been a custom character. Pearl Abyss already proved with Black Desert Online that it has some of the best character creation tools in the industry. Letting players create their own protagonist would have been a far better choice than a pre-made character nobody cares about.
An alleged developer has even suggested that the story was an afterthought compared to the world and gameplay. If true, it explains a lot about why Kliff feels so hollow.
Final Thoughts
Crimson Desert has a lot going for it — a stunning world, ambitious mechanics, and endless exploration. But its protagonist might be one of the most forgettable in modern gaming. Here's hoping Pearl Abyss addresses this in future updates or DLC, because right now, Kliff is dragging the experience down.
