Black Flag's Best Feature Was Supposed To Be Bigger In Assassin's Creed 3 – Here's Why It Wasn't

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

Gamers rarely agree on anything — we're too busy arguing over consoles, exclusives, and which company deserves our loyalty. But here's something that unites us all: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's naval combat was absolutely incredible. Fans loved it so much they begged Ubisoft for years to make an entire game centered around ship battles. Unfortunately, that wish eventually manifested as Skull & Bones, but the point still stands.

Now, in a fascinating reveal, former director Alex Hutchinson has shared that the beloved naval feature was originally meant to play a much bigger role in Assassin's Creed 3 — but fear held the team back.

Why Naval Combat Took A Backseat In AC3

In an interview with PC Gamer, Hutchinson explained the behind-the-scenes concerns that limited naval gameplay in AC3:

"There was a whole fear that the tech [for the ships] wouldn't work."

The development team couldn't risk betting everything on untested technology. If the ship mechanics failed, the entire game would suffer.

"So it couldn't be a huge part of the main story, because we weren't certain it was going to work. And then when it was cool, then you're like, 'This is great.'"

Essentially, the team played it safe. They couldn't put all their eggs in one basket, especially under an old development model where Alpha, Beta, and Final builds came in rapid succession, leaving little room for major pivots.

By the time everyone realized the naval mechanics were amazing, it was too late to expand their role in AC3. That potential had to wait for Black Flag, where it finally became the star of the show.

It's fascinating to imagine how different AC3 could've been if Ubisoft had taken the risk earlier.

Is Coming — Eventually

In one of gaming's worst-kept secrets, Black Flag is getting a remake. It's been hinted at, semi-confirmed, and un-confirmed so many times that fans have whiplash. But at this point, it genuinely seems like we're in the clear.

The remake is expected to release sometime from April onward, giving fans a chance to relive:

  • Glorious naval combat with modern graphics
  • Iconic sea shanties that still live rent-free in our heads
  • Edward Kenway's unforgettable pirate adventure

Given that it's a full remake, there's a good chance Ubisoft will finally deliver their complete vision for the game — which is an exciting prospect despite the frustrating will-they-won't-they announcement cycle.

Final Thoughts

It's wild to think that Black Flag's best feature almost got sidelined entirely due to technical fears. Thankfully, Ubisoft eventually went all-in — and now we're getting a remake to experience it all over again.
