Development Update: Rooms Scenes and Battles
Toby Fox released the Winter 2025 newsletter with an encouraging status report on Deltarune Chapter 5.
The core components of the game are nearing completion, with all rooms finished except for minor background touch-ups.
Most scenes are also complete, with only a handful requiring final visual polish. While most battles are functional from beginning to end, the team is currently refining bullet patterns and pacing for a few remaining encounters to ensure they meet the series high standards for combat.
The Road to 2026: Localization and Testing
Work on Chapter 5 has officially reached the localization phase, with the text already extracted and annotated by Fox for the translation team at 8-4.
Once this stage concludes, the game will move into a professional testing phase to iron out any lingering bugs.
Fox plans to begin examining console performance and optimization in January 2026. Given the remaining work, he provided a realistic estimate that the release is still several months away.
While earlier projections suggested the first half of the year, Fox noted that a launch in the second half of 2026 is now a more realistic expectation.
Nintendo Switch 2 and Special Features
Deltarune continues to utilize unique hardware capabilities, specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2 which launched in June 2025.
The console Mouse Mode is expected to return in Chapter 5, following its debut in the Switch 2 versions of Chapters 1 through 4. Fox previously confirmed that the Switch 2 version includes a small special room designed specifically for Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, a feature that exists in other versions but with different control configurations.
Ensuring these platform-specific features work correctly is a primary goal for the January console testing phase.
Looking Ahead to Chapter 6
As Chapter 5 moves into the final stages of polish and testing, the development team is already preparing for the next step. Fox mentioned that in a few months, much of the team will shift their attention to Chapter 6.
This indicates a more streamlined production pipeline compared to the lengthy development cycles seen in the past. Fans who already own the paid version of Deltarune can look forward to Chapter 5 as a free update once it officially launches next year.
