Mass Effect 5: Everything We Know About the Next Sci-Fi Epic

It has been over five years since BioWare first teased the future of the Mass Effect franchise, and while the hype remains high, concrete details are still floating in the vacuum of space. Currently referred to as Mass Effect 5 until an official title drops, the project is officially BioWare's primary focus now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard has launched.

Despite the anticipation, the game was notably absent from The Game Awards 2025, leaving fans to rely on the updates provided during recent N7 Day communications. Here is everything we know so far about the next journey into the stars.

Development Status and Release Window

BioWare has not yet confirmed a release date for Mass Effect 5. While executive producer Mike Gamble used N7 Day 2025 to reassure fans that the team is still working on the project, the timeline suggests we are still years away from a launch.

  • Current Phase: As of late 2025, the game is believed to be in the early stages of development. It was in the prototyping phase as of 2022, where the team experimented with new ideas and experiences.

  • Release Estimates: Industry reports, including those from Jeff Grubb, suggest a development cycle similar to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, potentially placing a release in 2028 or 2029.

  • The Team: The current development team is a mix of franchise veterans and new talent. With many original trilogy leads having moved on, the community expects a fresh feel for this entry.

Story and Setting: What the Teasers Reveal

While BioWare is keeping the plot under wraps, the initial announcement trailer and subsequent concept art have provided some major clues:

  • A Bridge Between Galaxies: The teaser features shots of two different galaxies, leading to theories that the game will serve as a sequel to both the original Mass Effect trilogy in the Milky Way and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

  • The Return of Liara: An older Liara T’Soni appears in the trailer, discovering a piece of N7 armor. Since Asari can live for a millennium, this suggests the game could take place hundreds of years after Mass Effect 3.

  • Post-War Universe: The presence of destroyed Reapers in the trailer suggests the game will follow the aftermath of the Reaper War, potentially addressing the consequences of the original trilogy's ending.

Technical Details and Production

  • Engine: BioWare is moving away from the Frostbite engine. Job postings have confirmed Mass Effect 5 is being built on Unreal Engine 5.

  • Visual Style: Mike Gamble has stated the game will aim for a photorealistic aesthetic, contrasting with the more stylized look of the recent Dragon Age.

  • Narrative Lead: Mary DeMarle, known for her acclaimed work on Deus Ex and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has joined as Senior Narrative Director.

Platforms and Features

While official platforms haven't been locked in, the projected release window makes the target hardware fairly predictable:

  • Expected Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Given the 2028 or 2029 estimates, it is unlikely to support older hardware like the PS4 or Xbox One.

  • Multiplayer: No official word yet. Fans are hoping for the return of the fan-favorite Horde mode seen in Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda.

  • Monetization: There is currently no info on DLC or microtransactions. Historically, the series has featured both story-driven expansions and multiplayer-focused purchases.

What’s Next?

BioWare has reaffirmed that they remain committed to telling more stories in this universe, but for now, patience is required. We expect the next major update to arrive during N7 Day on November 7, 2026.
