Housemarque's Saros Pushed to April 2026, Details Key Returnal Differences

Well, the latest trailer for Housemarque's next big project, Saros, didn't exactly deliver a ton of new gameplay moments, we still saw plenty of gorgeous, bullet-hell chaos, terrifying tentacles, and the very handsome, angsty face of lead actor Rahul Kohli.

The biggest takeaway, however, was the announcement of a new release date. Saros is now scheduled to launch on April 30, 2026, pushing back from the original March 20th date.

The developer stated the one-month extension is simply to ensure the game "exceeds our vision".

Less Roguelite, More Progression

While Saros definitely feels like a spiritual successor to Returnal, the developers are making sure their new game, starring Kohli as Soltari Enforcer Arjun Devraj, pulls further away from the most punishing aspects of the roguelite territory.

The key differences boil down to one main philosophy: Permanent Progression.

In Saros, resources and progression are not lost upon death. This is a major departure from Returnal's brutal loop, where players had to rely on pure skill and random drops to advance through a single run.

  • Permanent Upgrades: After a run, you can choose and permanently augment your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades. The tagline for the game is "Come Back Stronger," which emphasizes this change.

  • Shifting World: Like Returnal, the world of Carcosa will still be altered and reshaped after death, ensuring each run feels unique.

  • The Passage Hub: Players return to the "Passage" hub between runs to manage this permanent progression and talk to the ensemble cast of NPCs (including characters voiced by Ben Prendergast and Jane Perry).

Housemarque is clearly aiming for a more approachable experience that still retains the fast-paced, "bullet ballet" action they are known for, while minimizing the sense that a long, successful run was completely wasted upon death.

Are you excited about the permanent progression changes in Saros, or do you miss the super-punishing nature of Returnal?
