Nintendo is planning regular movie releases, and it’s all thanks to the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
During its latest financial meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the company wants a “consistent release cadence” for films—meaning we’ll likely see a new Nintendo movie every year or two.
What’s Coming
The official roadmap shows:
-
🎬 The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — April 2026
-
🎬 Live-Action The Legend of Zelda — May 2027
-
❓ More films are hinted at—but titles are still secret (Donkey Kong, anyone? Rumors say yes!)
Furukawa told investors:
“We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future.”
Nintendo Is in Full Control—Thanks to Miyamoto
Unlike past deals (remember the 1993 Mario movie? Yeah…), Nintendo is now deeply involved in every step—from story planning to final editing.
Legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing all films:
-
With Chris Meledandri (Illumination) for Mario
-
With Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man) for Zelda
Nintendo is even helping fund the movies—so they keep creative control and protect what fans love.
Why Now
Because The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive hit:
-
🌍 $1.36 billion worldwide
-
💰 $559 million profit (most profitable movie of 2023!)
-
👀 Watched by 170 million people
That success gave Nintendo the confidence—and resources—to go bigger.
They’ve also built their own teams:
-
🎞️ Nintendo Pictures (animation studio, bought in 2022)
-
🛍️ Nintendo Stars (new licensing company for merch and events)
And yes—early signs point to a Donkey Kong movie in the works, with Universal Pictures on board.
Bonus: Zelda Movie Starts Filming This Month
The live-action Zelda film—directed by Wes Ball (Maze Runner) and starring Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link—begins shooting in New Zealand this November. Insiders say it could be the first of a trilogy over six years.
So get ready: Nintendo isn’t just making games anymore. It’s building a whole entertainment universe—one beloved character at a time.
