Marvel Rivals Drops To Mixed Reviews As Matchmaking And Performance Complaints Grow

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

When Marvel Rivals first launched in 2024, it felt like lightning in a bottle. It was fast, flashy, and positioned as a genuine alternative to Overwatch at a time when Blizzard’s hero shooter was struggling. The community hype was real, and for a while, it looked like NetEase had nailed it.

Fast forward to today, and the tone has shifted.

With Season 7 winding down, Marvel Rivals’ recent Steam reviews have slipped into “Mixed.” A wave of negative feedback is dragging down the score, and the complaints are stacking up — particularly around matchmaking, performance, and the game’s increasingly massive file size.

Matchmaking Frustrations Are Front And Center

One of the most common criticisms appearing in recent reviews revolves around the matchmaking system.

“Terrible match-making system. The company claims it does not use an ‘engagement’ matching system, but it clearly does,” one recent negative review reads.

Another player described it as “the worst matchmaking I’ve seen in any online game,” alleging that matches feel intentionally manipulated to create a cycle of wins and losses to keep players grinding.

While NetEase has repeatedly denied using engagement-based matchmaking, some players believe the pattern of easy wins followed by punishing losses feels too consistent to be random.

Even outside conspiracy theories, there are legitimate complaints about uneven skill gaps. Players report being thrown into matches where teams feel wildly unbalanced, either steamrolling opponents or being steamrolled themselves.

And yes — bot matches are still reportedly appearing after losing streaks, something that continues to frustrate competitive players looking for meaningful progression.

Performance And File Size Issues Aren’t Helping

Matchmaking isn’t the only sore spot.

There have also been noticeable complaints about framerate dips and performance instability in recent patches. As Marvel Rivals continues adding new heroes, skins, maps, and seasonal content, its file size has ballooned.

Players are now openly calling for a file size optimization pass. It’s not unheard of in live-service games — Helldivers 2 famously cut its install size by an astonishing 85 percent last December through smart compression and cleanup.

If Marvel Rivals wants to maintain accessibility, especially for players with limited storage space, a similar move might be necessary.

Even The Skins Are Getting Criticism

Interestingly, some complaints are less technical and more aesthetic. A portion of the community has started criticizing certain skins as being overly “gooner,” arguing that they push character design into territory that feels excessive rather than stylish.

Whether that’s a widespread issue or just a loud minority is debatable, but it’s another sign that player sentiment isn’t as universally positive as it once was.

Can Season 8 Turn Things Around?

Season 8 kicks off on May 15, and it could be a pivotal moment for Marvel Rivals. If NetEase can address matchmaking transparency, performance optimization, and community concerns head-on, the game might regain its footing.

Otherwise, with Overwatch regaining stability, competition in the hero shooter space is only getting tougher.
