Starfield Is Off To A Slow Start On PS5 — And It Could Spell Trouble For Xbox's Multiplatform Strategy

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

Xbox's bold move to bring its games to PlayStation 5 was always going to be a gamble, and early signs suggest that bet isn't paying off the way Microsoft hoped — at least not with Starfield. According to data from Alinea Analytics, Starfield has sold just over 140,000 copies on PS5 since launching on April 7, which is a pretty underwhelming number for one of Bethesda's biggest titles. Here's why this matters, what it means for Xbox's multiplatform future, and whether things could turn around.

Starfield's PS5 Numbers Are Disappointing

Let's put 140,000 copies into context. That figure is better than some recent Xbox ports on PS5, but it's far from impressive for a major Bethesda release.

How Starfield compares to other Xbox PS5 ports:

GamePS5 Sales
Forza Horizon 55 Million+
Sea of Thieves1.8 Million+
Ninja Gaiden 4257,000
The Outer Worlds 2160,000
Starfield140,000
Avowed54,000
South of Midnight16,000

The contrast between Starfield and the massive early wins Xbox saw with Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 5 is stark. Those numbers were likely what encouraged Microsoft to keep pursuing the multiplatform route. Starfield isn't delivering the same energy.

Why PlayStation Players Aren't Rushing In

The slow start isn't entirely surprising when you consider the context.

Starfield wasn't the critical smash hit Bethesda needed it to be when it launched on Xbox and PC. Reviews were mixed, and while it sold over a million copies and saw millions more on Game Pass, it never captured that must-play feeling. PlayStation players who watched from the sidelines didn't exactly develop serious envy over missing it.

On top of that, the PS5 version is currently plagued by crashes, which is actively hurting its reputation at launch. Fixing those issues quickly could lead to a noticeable sales bump, but every day the problems persist is another reason for hesitant buyers to hold off.

What This Means For Xbox's Multiplatform Strategy

This slow performance could add serious fuel to the growing internal debate about whether Xbox should have gone multiplatform in the first place.

The early wins with Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 5 made the strategy look genius. But if Starfield underperforms and the novelty of Xbox games on PS5 continues to wear off, those pushing for a return to exclusives inside Microsoft will have stronger ammunition than ever.

The real test is still coming though. Halo: Campaign Evolved launches simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5 later this year, and those numbers will tell a much bigger story about whether the multiplatform era has a real future.

Final Thoughts

Starfield on PS5 isn't a disaster, but it's not the success Xbox needed either. With crashes still unresolved and sales underwhelming, the pressure is building fast.
