Dune: Awakening Is Finally Adding PvE-Only Deep Desert — Because 80% Of Players Avoid PvP Entirely

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

If you've been playing Dune: Awakening and wishing you could experience the Deep Desert without constantly getting ganked by ornithopters, you're about to get exactly what you asked for. Developer Funcom just announced that PvE-only Deep Desert instances are now live as of patch 1.3.20.0, and honestly, this is a massive shift for the game. The reason? A staggering 80% of players have been avoiding PvP entirely, which means forcing everyone into the same endgame zones clearly wasn't working. Here's what changed, how PvP players are being compensated, and why this update could be exactly what Dune: Awakening needed to keep its community happy long-term.

Funcom Admits Forcing PvE And PvP Together Didn't Work

In a new blog post reported by Eurogamer, Funcom revealed that over 80% of lifetime players in Dune: Awakening have exclusively engaged with PvE content. That's a huge majority, and it meant that requiring players to enter PvP zones to access the Deep Desert — arguably the most iconic part of the entire Dune experience — was creating serious friction.

"The convergence of PvE and PvP, particularly in the Deep Desert, didn't align with our objectives and remained a significant topic of discussion," the team explained.

Translation: players were frustrated, and the data backed it up.

Funcom said they combined in-game data, player surveys, and their own design goals, and the conclusion was clear: PvP should be optional, not required for progression.

What's Changed In Patch 1.3.20.0

As of the latest update, all PvP zones in Hagga Basin have been disabled, and players now have access to PvE-only Deep Desert instances.

That means you can finally explore, harvest spice, and tackle Imperial Testing Stations without worrying about getting ambushed by other players.

Key changes:

  • PvE-only Deep Desert instances are now available
  • No forced player combat in endgame zones
  • Pure survival and exploration experience for the 80% who wanted it

This is a win for anyone who just wants to enjoy the world of Dune without the constant threat of getting ganked.

PvP Players Are Getting Serious Incentives

Funcom didn't forget about the 20% of players who actually enjoy PvP. To keep those instances populated and rewarding, the studio introduced 2.5x yield bonuses for harvesting spice and mining in PvP Deep Desert zones.

That's a significant boost, and it should help make PvP feel like an attractive choice instead of a punishment.

"By separating these experiences," Funcom said, "we allow players to hunt for spice or explore Imperial Testing Stations without the constant threat of a blade in the dark, while ensuring those who live for the thrill of the hunt have a dedicated arena to prove their mettle and the rewards to make it worthwhile."

Community Servers Are Coming Soon

On top of the PvE/PvP split, Funcom also announced that self-hosting servers are coming to Dune: Awakening soon.

Hosts will be able to customize:

  • Harvesting rates
  • Base building limits
  • Item durability
  • PvP rules

That kind of flexibility could be huge for communities that want to fine-tune their experience even further.

Final Thoughts

This update is exactly what Dune: Awakening needed. Forcing PvE players into PvP zones was always going to cause problems, and Funcom finally listened.
