Hey, Daily Quest readers.
The battle of the extraction shooters is officially underway. Marathon versus Arc Raiders — it was always going to happen. Both are massive open extraction shooters released just months apart, and when Bungie boldly declared that Marathon would give cheaters "no second chances," many saw it as a direct shot at Arc Raiders' three-strikes policy. A rivalry was inevitable.
Now that Marathon has launched, the player count debates have begun. And unfortunately for Team Marathon, the numbers tell an interesting story.
Marathon's Launch Numbers Are Good — But Not Great
According to SteamDB, Marathon peaked at 88,337 concurrent players on PC a day after release. That's a solid number for any game — but it's nowhere near the heights that Arc Raiders hit during its own launch window.
It's good. But it's not Slay the Spire 2 good.
Arc Raiders Seems Completely Unaffected
Here's where things get really interesting. You'd expect that since Marathon and Arc Raiders share the same genre, they'd also share the same audience. Logic suggests Arc Raiders' player count should have dipped slightly as curious players jumped over to try Bungie's new shooter.
But that didn't happen.
On Marathon's launch day, Arc Raiders posted a daily peak of 192,003 players on Steam. Sure, that's the lowest of the week — but for context, the previous Friday saw a peak of 192,810. That's barely a difference.
| Game | Peak Players (Launch Day) |
|---|---|
| Marathon | 88,337 |
| Arc Raiders | 192,003 |
Arc Raiders is sitting at more than double Marathon's numbers, and its player base hasn't budged. That's remarkable.
Different Games, Different Audiences?
These numbers suggest that despite being in the same genre, Marathon and Arc Raiders have attracted different audiences. Maybe it's the gameplay style, maybe it's the tone, or maybe Arc Raiders has simply built a loyal community that isn't interested in jumping ship.
Of course, SteamDB only tracks PC players. Marathon is a Sony-published game, so it's possible the PlayStation player base is significantly larger. These things usually correlate, but we won't know for sure until more data emerges.
Good News For Extraction Shooter Fans
The silver lining here? Both games can coexist. It's refreshing to see two titles in the same genre flourish simultaneously instead of one cannibalizing the other.
If you're an extraction shooter fan, you're eating well right now. We'll have to wait and see if Marathon can build momentum over the weekend and whether Arc Raiders maintains its dominance.
