Hey, Daily Quest readers.
Black Ops Royale is almost here — the highly anticipated Blackout-inspired mode drops in Call of Duty: Warzone tomorrow, March 12, as part of the massive Season 2 Reloaded update. The nostalgia is real, the hype is through the roof, and fans are desperate to get back to a stripped-down, loot-what-you-find Battle Royale experience.
But there's one major issue that's already got the community fired up: there's no Solos mode at launch. Black Ops Royale is shipping with Quads only, and solo players are understandably frustrated. Raven Software has stepped in to explain — but the response hasn't exactly calmed everyone down. Let's break it all down.
A Quick History Lesson: From Blackout To Warzone
For context, Blackout was Call of Duty's very first Battle Royale mode, introduced in Black Ops 4 back in 2018. It replaced the traditional single-player campaign and quickly became a fan favorite. However, support for Blackout ended when Warzone launched in 2020 as a free-to-play, standalone Battle Royale.
Warzone became a juggernaut, but it's a very different experience from Blackout. Custom loadouts, Gulag respawns, Buy Stations — Warzone added layers of complexity that divided the community. Many players missed Blackout's simplicity.
Late last year, Activision surprised everyone by announcing that Blackout was coming back in a reimagined form. Enter Black Ops Royale.
Why No Solos? Raven Software Responds
It's been confirmed that Black Ops Royale launches with Quads matchmaking only. No Solos. No Duos. No Trios. Just Quads.
Naturally, solo players are not happy. In response, Raven Software issued a statement on Twitter:
"Because this is such a fresh experience, and with many possible directions we could take, we chose to launch with a single mode based on the squad size that has proven to be the most popular across all of our other modes."
The studio acknowledged the feedback and promised to "continue the dialogue" with the community — which is developer-speak for "we're listening, but no promises."
My Take
I get the logic. Launching with one squad size lets Raven focus on nailing the core experience without splitting the player base across multiple playlists on day one. But I also understand the frustration. Solo players have always been a massive part of the Battle Royale community, and telling them to find three friends or matchmake with randoms feels like a rough ask — especially for a mode built on nostalgia.
If Black Ops Royale takes off (and it probably will), expect Solos, Duos, and Trios to follow in future updates.
No Weapon Skins At Launch Either
In a separate post, Raven also addressed questions about weapon cosmetics. Unfortunately, players won't be able to use their weapon skins in Black Ops Royale at launch.
The studio explained that bringing Blackout back was a "massive effort" spanning multiple development teams, and implementing full cosmetic support "requires significant development time." Their priority right now is making sure the gameplay experience is solid.
Raven promised to evaluate the situation and provide updates on potential cosmetic integration down the road. For now, it's function over fashion.
What Is Black Ops Royale? Everything We Know
Black Ops Royale isn't a 1:1 recreation of Blackout, but it's heavily inspired by it. Here's what's confirmed:
What's Returning:
- No custom weapon loadouts — loot what you find
- No Gulag — one life, make it count
- No Buy Stations
- Wingsuits for traversal
- Bullet drop and realistic weapon handling
- Classic armor system and Trauma Kits
What's New:
- A brand-new map called Avalon
- Built within Warzone's modern infrastructure
This is a back-to-basics Battle Royale, and for players who've been craving that raw, no-frills experience, it could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
What Else Is In Season 2 Reloaded?
Even if Black Ops Royale isn't your thing, today's Season 2 Reloaded update for Black Ops 7 is absolutely loaded:
Multiplayer:
- Returning fan-favorite maps: Grind, Firing Range, and Cliff Town
- New weapons and modes
Zombies:
- Brand-new round-based map: Paradox Junction
- Players jump between different versions of Nuketown across timelines
- New weapons, modes, and more
Paradox Junction is the standout here. Jumping between alternate Nuketown realities in a round-based Zombies experience? That's the kind of creative chaos Treyarch excels at, and I can't wait to try it.
Final Thoughts
The lack of Solos at launch is a bummer, and the absence of weapon skins adds to the frustration. But the core concept of Black Ops Royale — a stripped-down, Blackout-inspired Battle Royale on a brand-new map — sounds incredibly promising. If Raven nails the gameplay, the rest will follow.
Tomorrow's the day. Avalon awaits.
