Hey, Daily Quest readers.
Let's be real — Arc Raiders has a cheating problem. The extraction shooter is currently dealing with surprisingly sophisticated hacks, some of which are being monetized by cheaters looking to make a quick buck from their exploits. It's a frustrating situation for legitimate players, and Embark Studios is finally stepping up enforcement.
This comes shortly after Bungie made headlines with its zero-tolerance approach to cheating in Marathon, promising "no second chances" for anyone caught cheating. Coincidence? Maybe. But the timing is definitely interesting.
Arc Raiders Is Tightening The Rules
In a recent post, Embark Studios announced that the team is "further tightening our rules and stepping up enforcement" with "stricter consequences" for serious infractions.
Here's the breakdown of their new approach:
- Strong detections = Permanent bans immediately
- Lesser infractions = Temporary suspension with one chance to correct behavior
- Family Sharing updates have strengthened their ability to remove bad actors
- A systematic manual review of ban appeals is launching soon
The studio also pulled back the curtain on just how complex anti-cheat efforts actually are:
"Our defenses operate on multiple levels: some checks are simple and definitive, while others are behavioural and data-driven and evolve over time. We also leverage broad gameplay telemetry and machine learning techniques to spot patterns that aren't obvious at first glance."
Basically, catching cheaters isn't as simple as flipping a switch. Some detection methods take time to develop, adapt as the game changes, and don't always offer instant certainty.
Is This A Response To Marathon?
The tone of Embark's post feels slightly defensive, almost like they're responding to the buzz around Marathon's aggressive anti-cheat stance. Bungie recently promised permanent bans with no second chances for cheaters in their upcoming extraction shooter, which launches March 5.
It's hard to believe that didn't influence Arc Raiders' messaging. Both games occupy the same extraction shooter space, and players are already comparing them. If Marathon launches with a reputation for being cheat-free while Arc Raiders struggles, that's a problem.
That said, there's an important distinction here: Bungie's promises are still theoretical. Marathon hasn't released yet, so we don't actually know how effective their anti-cheat will be in practice. Embark, on the other hand, is actively fighting cheaters right now in a live environment — which is a much harder battle.
The Anti-Cheat Arms Race Continues
The world of anti-cheat is getting increasingly complex. Major developers like Riot and Electronic Arts have implemented kernel-level anti-cheat software to combat sophisticated hacks. It's an arms race, and studios are throwing everything they have at the problem.
Arc Raiders is still young, and Embark acknowledges that the volume of telemetry is enormous. But they're clearly investing heavily in detection tools and enforcement precision.
Final Thoughts
Embark Studios is taking cheating seriously, and the stricter consequences are a welcome step. Whether it's enough to match Marathon's zero-tolerance hype remains to be seen — but at least they're fighting back.
