As of January 8, 2026, Mojang has officially released Minecraft Java Snapshot 26.1 Snapshot 2 and Bedrock Preview 26.0.27. This marks the first deep dive into the 2026 "Game Drop" cycle, following a massive 2025 that saw the release of A Minecraft Movie and four major content updates.
The theme for this first drop of the year—predicted by the community to be titled "Cute Companions"—focuses on visual overhauls for passive mobs and highly requested quality-of-life changes.
The Great Baby Mob Revamp
For the first time since their introduction, baby mobs are being completely redesigned. Instead of being shrunken adults with big heads, they now have unique models, textures, and behaviors.
All New Versions of Baby Farm Mobs
- Wolf Pup
- Kitten
- Piglet
- Calf
- Baby Chicken
- Baby Ocelot
- Lamb
- Baby Rabbit
The "One-Pixel" Rule: Agnes Larsson (Game Director) noted that while most mobs have two-pixel eyes, these new baby versions use only a single pixel, creating a more "innocent and adorable" look.
Custom Sounds: Audio designer Sandra Karlsson has added unique, high-pitched "heart-melting" sounds for piglets, wolf pups, and kittens to separate them from the adult audio files.
Craftable Name Tags Are Finally Here
In a move that has stunned long-term players, Name Tags are no longer exclusive to loot chests, fishing, or trading. You can now craft them at any crafting table.
Recipe: 1 Paper + 1 Metal Nugget (Works with Iron, Gold, or Copper nuggets).
Why now? Mojang wants players to be able to "bond" with and keep their favorite new baby mobs without the grind of searching for rare dungeon loot.
Other Key Snapshot Features
Rabbit Overhaul: Adult rabbits have been remodeled with fluffier tails and new animations, such as standing on their hind legs and tilting their heads.
Technical Buffs: The game now allocates 4 GB of RAM by default (up from 2 GB) to reduce stuttering on modern systems.
JVM Changes: Garbage collection has been upgraded to ZGC for compatible devices, significantly improving performance for high-end PCs.
Spawn Egg Logic: In Bedrock, using a spawn egg on an adult mob will now correctly spawn its baby variant, matching Java's long-standing behavior.
Are you planning to build a "Pet Sanctuary" now that Name Tags are easy to get, or are you just going to spend the afternoon watching the new baby chicks zoom around your farm?
