Destiny 2 Update Pushed, Is Marathon Crashing the Party?

Hold onto your jumpships, Guardians. It looks like the next major chapter in the Year of Prophecy is hitting a snag. Recent reports suggest that Destiny 2’s "Shadow and Order" update, originally slated for a March 2 release, has been pushed back.

While the Renegades expansion has been a massive win for Bungie—largely thanks to its surprisingly awesome Star Wars vibes—it seems the studio is rearranging the calendar to avoid a collision with its other "big bet" for 2026.

The Paul Tassi Report: A Delay Looming?

The news comes via Paul Tassi at Forbes, who reports that his sources within Bungie have confirmed a shift in the schedule. While the Shadow and Order update was expected to drop on March 2, the current internal plan is to move it.

As of now, Bungie hasn't officially commented on the length of the delay or when we’ll get a formal announcement. However, given Tassi's track record with Bungie leaks, the community is already bracing for a longer wait.

The Marathon Factor

The reason for the reshuffle isn't exactly a mystery. Bungie recently confirmed that Marathon, their highly anticipated extraction shooter, is officially launching on March 5, 2026.

Launching a major Destiny 2 update just three days before your first new IP in nearly a decade is a recipe for internal competition. By moving Shadow and Order, Bungie ensures that Marathon gets the undivided attention it needs for a successful launch—especially after the 2025 art controversy and plagiarism hurdles it had to clear to get here.

What’s at Stake for Destiny 2?

While fans are frustrated, Destiny 2 is currently in a relatively good spot thanks to the Renegades expansion. Here is why the community is so protective of the current momentum:

  • The "Star Wars" Magic: Fans have been obsessed with the Star Wars-inspired content, specifically the Praxic Blade (which is basically a kinetic Lightsaber) and the Tharsis Outpost social hub on Mars.

  • Vanguard Alerts: The return of a structured weekly ritual system has brought back veteran players who missed the classic Nightfall grind.

  • New Weaponry: High-performance gear like the Uncivil Discourse and the A499 heavy sniper have kept the meta feeling fresh.

Shadow and Order is expected to be a mid-season refresh similar to the Ash and Iron update. Given that Ash and Iron received a lukewarm reception, Bungie likely wants to ensure Shadow and Order is as polished as possible to keep the Renegades hype train moving.

Crossover Content Inbound

To bridge the gap between the two games, Bungie has already announced a series of Marathon-themed crossovers for Destiny 2. Keep an eye out for:

  • "Waiting for Exfil" Exotic multiplayer emote

  • Modern MIDA Multi-tool Exotic ornament

  • Silkworm Weave Legendary shader

What’s your take? Are you okay with a Destiny delay if it means Marathon gets a smoother launch, or are you tired of the "backseat" treatment? Let us know in the comments!
