2XKO Screen Tearing is Breaking the Console Launch—Here is the Situation

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

2XKO officially hit consoles on January 20, and while Riot’s free-to-play fighter was hyped to take over the FGC, a massive technical hurdle is ruining the experience for thousands of players. We are talking about horrific screen tearing that is literally splitting matches in half.

PS5 and PS5 Pro players are flooding Reddit and social media with reports of "unplayable" conditions. Horizontal rips mid-combo are a total nightmare for a game that relies on frame-perfect precision. While Xbox players have found a temporary band-aid, PS5 users are currently stuck waiting for Riot to break their silence.

What is Happening? The "Tear-Fest" Explained

Screen tearing happens when your GPU sends frames to the monitor faster than it can refresh, resulting in a visible horizontal split. In fighting games, V-Sync is often forced off to minimize input lag, but in 2XKO's case, the implementation on consoles seems to have missed the mark.

The issue is especially jarring on 120Hz and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) displays. While the beta versions of the game were relatively stable, the 1.0 launch has introduced:

  • Aggressive Tearing: Happening in the lobby, tutorials, and matches.

  • FPS Dips: Reports of matches dropping to 25–30 FPS on PS5 Pro.

  • Input Delay: Combined with the tearing, players are dropping combos they easily hit during the Alpha Labs.

The Xbox "Band-Aid" Fix (PS5 Players, Look Away)

There is some good news for the Xbox crowd. Because the Xbox Series X/S has a more robust system-level implementation for 120Hz, players can significantly reduce the tearing with these steps:

  1. Go to Console Settings: Display & Sound > Video Modes.

  2. Enable 120Hz: This reduces frame times and masks the "split" effect.

  3. Enable VRR: Set it to "Always On" if your display supports it.

The PS5 Problem: Unfortunately, Sony’s VRR implementation requires the game to explicitly support it. Since 2XKO currently lacks native 120Hz/VRR support on PlayStation, PS5 owners have no way to toggle this at the system level to fix the tearing.

Riot’s Silence and Ranked Downtime

Adding fuel to the fire, Ranked mode was taken offline on January 24–25 to address "game-impacting bugs." While Riot is working on backend issues and the Caitlyn Recruitment Event, they have yet to officially acknowledge the screen tearing on their "Known Issues" page.

Players are already warning that the game could be "dead on arrival" on console if this isn't addressed by Patch 1.0.4. When competitors like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 offer silky-smooth performance on the same hardware, 2XKO's technical state stands out for all the wrong reasons.

The Verdict: Hold the Line

Riot is known for patching fast once they lock onto a problem (just look at the Yasuo crash hotfix from December). If you're on PS5, your best bet is to submit a support ticket to help move this up the priority list.

Which champ are you maining through the chaos? Are you sticking with Darius tag-ins or trying to master Caitlyn despite the rips? Let me know in the comments—I’m reading every rant! Share this with your duo so they know it’s not just their monitor acting up.

Stay questing!
