Rumor: Massive Epic Games Store Free Game Leak Puts Red Dead Redemption 2 on the List

The Epic Games Store's annual free mystery game promotion is officially underway, and the first major offering, Hogwarts Legacy, has already set the bar incredibly high. Now, a massive, unconfirmed leak claiming to reveal the entire December schedule is circulating online.

Epic Games has officially confirmed that there will be a total of 17 free mystery games given away during the holiday season, with the daily giveaways starting after Hogwarts Legacy leaves the store on Thursday, December 18 at 10:00 am CST.

The Supposed Leaked Schedule

Originating from Chinese social media, this rumored list has been met with both excitement and extreme skepticism. The list features a mix of high-profile AAA titles and smaller indie hits:

DateSupposed Free Mystery Game
December 11-18Hogwarts Legacy (Confirmed)
December 18Jurassic World Evolution 2
December 19Desperados 3
December 20Total War: Warhammer
December 21Tropico 5
December 22Chicken Police: Paint It Red
December 23Loop Hero
December 24LEGO Batman
December 25Commander Keen
December 26Farming Simulator 2022
December 27Slime Rancher 2
December 28Terraria
December 29Detroit: Become Human
December 30Mortal Kombat 11
December 31Red Dead Redemption 2

Why It's Likely Too Good To Be True

While the general pattern of mixing budget sizes fits with Epic's previous holiday giveaways (which notably included Grand Theft Auto V in the past), there are several "serious red flags" that suggest this list is a fake:

  • Commander Keen on Christmas Day: The biggest flaw is the placement of Commander Keen on December 25th. In previous years, Christmas Day has been reserved for one of the absolute biggest titles, such as Control. Giving away the smaller, very old Commander Keen on this high-profile day, only to follow up with massive games like Mortal Kombat 11 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at the very end of the month, seems counter-intuitive to Epic's strategy of maximizing impact.

  • Missing Games: Several titles on the list are currently not available on the Epic Games Store, including Commander Keen. While games can debut as free titles, having multiple on a single list is suspicious.

  • The Red Dead Redemption 2 Factor: While Epic has given away huge Rockstar titles before (GTA V), securing the massive, critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2—which is still a best-seller—is a huge financial commitment that is difficult to believe.

  • Incomplete Schedule: The official count is 17 games, but this leaked list only accounts for games up to December 31st (15 games total, including Hogwarts Legacy). The promotion is known to extend into early January, suggesting this list is incomplete or completely inaccurate.

How We'll Know for Sure

Luckily, fans won't have to wait long. The credibility of the entire leak rests on the game released on Thursday, December 18th. If the game is Jurassic World Evolution 2, the list gains immediate, significant credibility. If it is any other game, the list can be safely dismissed.

Which game on this leaked list are you hoping turns out to be real the most?
