Sony Releasing PlayStation Games on PC Has Paid Off in a Big Way

PlayStation has earned an estimated $1.2 billion in profit from selling its games on Steam, according to a detailed new analysis. With console exclusivity slowly fading, both Sony and Microsoft have expanded their reach by putting more first-party titles on competing platforms. While the long-term industry impact is still debated, the financial upside for Sony is already clear.

Although Sony hasn’t embraced day-one multiplatform launches as aggressively as Xbox, PC releases have become a major strategic pillar. CEO Herman Hulst has explained that PC ports of blockbuster titles like God of War help attract new players to the PS5, while simultaneous PlayStation-and-PC launches for live-service titles maximize community size from day one. The strong performance of games like Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn shows that the strategy is paying off.

PlayStation Games Have Generated $1.5 Billion on Steam

A November 21 report from Alinea Analytics estimates that Sony’s PlayStation titles have brought in over $1.5 billion in gross revenue on Steam. After Valve’s platform cut is deducted, that translates to about $1.2 billion in profit directly to Sony.

Helldivers 2 is the top performer by a wide margin, generating around $400 million in Steam revenue. This aligns with earlier reports showing that the game sold over 12 million copies across PC and PS5 in just 12 weeks—making it Sony’s fastest-selling game of all time.

The rest of the top five Steam performers are notable for being single-player hits, not live-service offerings:

  • Horizon Zero Dawn

  • God of War (2018)

  • Days Gone

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man

Each has sold strongly on PC, reinforcing the idea that Sony’s prestige single-player games have long tails when brought to new platforms.

Microsoft Is Benefiting Too

Sony isn’t the only one finding success with cross-platform releases. For example, Forza Horizon 5 earned $100 million in revenue from PS5 sales alone, and as of late 2024, PlayStation players accounted for 64% of all spending on Microsoft-published titles. With console sales slowing across the industry, releasing exclusive games elsewhere has proven to be a lucrative secondary revenue stream for both companies.

Why Sony Might Still Slow Down on PC Ports

Despite this success, rumors suggest Sony may be cautiously stepping back from bringing its biggest single-player sequels to PC as quickly. The Alinea Analytics data offers a clue: sequels haven’t matched the performance of series debuts on Steam.

  • God of War Ragnarök sold less than half of what God of War (2018) sold on PC.

  • Spider-Man 2 sold about half as well as the first Spider-Man PC release.

This suggests that while the initial entry in a franchise draws major interest from PC players, follow-up titles may see diminishing returns.

Regardless of how Sony adjusts its strategy going forward, the results are undeniable: PlayStation’s PC expansion has been a massive financial win, boosting revenue, expanding brand reach, and introducing iconic franchises to millions of new players worldwide.
