Classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Might Be Coming to Xbox Game Pass

A new Xbox Game Pass ad may have just revealed something fans have been waiting years to see: the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could finally be joining Microsoft’s subscription library.

While the evidence isn’t conclusive, a recently spotted Game Pass promotion seems to have accidentally hinted at the game’s arrival ahead of schedule. And if true, it would be one of the most exciting additions yet for longtime Call of Duty fans.

🕹️ A Legendary FPS Fans Still Remember

Originally released in November 2009 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Modern Warfare 2 remains one of the most beloved entries in the entire Call of Duty franchise. Its cinematic campaign, unforgettable set pieces, and tight multiplayer made it an instant classic that many still consider the peak of the series.

Ever since Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition in late 2023, Game Pass subscribers have been vocal about wanting legacy Call of Duty titles added to the service. Now, it seems that wish might finally be granted.

👀 A Tease Hidden in a New Xbox Game Pass Ad

Reddit user TypicalNarr recently spotted something interesting in an Xbox Game Pass Premium ad promoting the service’s $1 trial. The background collage in the ad features what appears to be the cover art for the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2, positioned near the top center of the image.

It’s a small detail, but fans quickly noticed that the image doesn’t match the 2020 Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered version, suggesting this could be a tease for the original game.

Of course, this could just be a coincidence or a design oversight. Microsoft’s marketing materials occasionally feature art that doesn’t necessarily correspond to upcoming Game Pass releases. Still, this isn’t the first time hints like this have preceded an official announcement.

🧩 Earlier Reports Back Up the Rumor

This isn’t the first sign that the 2009 shooter could be headed to Game Pass. Earlier this year, XboxEra reported that Modern Warfare 2 was scheduled to join the service, citing sources close to Microsoft. The report mentioned a March–April 2025 release window, though that timeline came and went without any announcement.

While a version of Modern Warfare 2 did arrive on Game Pass in May, it turned out to be the 2022 reboot, not the original classic. If this new advertisement turns out to be legitimate, the earlier leak might have been correct after all—just a few months early.

🔫 Game Pass Could Soon Host Half a Dozen Call of Duty Titles

If Modern Warfare 2 joins the lineup after Black Ops 7 arrives on November 14, it would become the sixth mainline Call of Duty game available through Xbox Game Pass.

It’s still unclear whether Microsoft would include the full multiplayer suite or only the single-player campaign, which seems more likely. Offering just the campaign would let nostalgic fans revisit the story without drawing players away from the franchise’s newer titles.

Whether intentional or not, the ad has certainly reignited excitement around Microsoft’s plan to expand Game Pass with more Call of Duty content. Fans might not have to wait long to find out if one of the most iconic shooters of all time is making its long-awaited return.
