Starfield's PS5 Launch Is Being Hit By Widespread Crashes — And It's Not Just A Few Players

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

Starfield finally made its way to PlayStation 5, and by most accounts, the game looks genuinely stunning — especially on PS5 Pro with PSSR doing its thing. But there's a pretty serious problem already overshadowing the launch: crashes. And not just a handful of isolated reports from unlucky players. We're talking widespread enough that Digital Foundry flagged it, Push Square covered it, and Reddit threads are filling up fast. For a game that fans have been waiting so long to play on PlayStation, this is a rough start. Here's what's being reported, how bad things seem to be, and whether Bethesda can fix this before it becomes a bigger story.

Digital Foundry Is Already Flagging The Crashes

This isn't just random internet noise. Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie — someone whose entire career is built on analyzing games with extreme precision — directly called out the crash issues in their Starfield PS5 breakdown.

"The game crashes a fair amount," Mackenzie said during the group's overview, noting that while simply roaming around New Atlantis, the game became completely unresponsive and required a full restart. He confirmed it happened across multiple modes on both PS5 and PS5 Pro.

His colleague Linneman noted that this was "new behavior" — something he hadn't encountered on Xbox Series or PC.

When Digital Foundry says a game has crash problems, it's worth taking seriously.

Players On Reddit Are Reporting The Same Issues

Beyond the big names, regular players are backing up these claims in force.

Reddit threads dedicated to Starfield PS5 crashes are growing, with some users reporting crashes happening uncomfortably often. One particularly unfortunate player claims they're crashing every two minutes, which sounds absolutely miserable.

Most players don't seem to be hitting it quite that hard, but the fact that crashes are showing up consistently across different users, hardware setups, and modes makes this clearly more than a fringe issue.

What's been reported:

  • Crashes while roaming large settlements like New Atlantis
  • Game becoming completely unresponsive mid-session
  • Issues appearing on both PS5 and PS5 Pro
  • No apparent fix available at launch

A Classic Bethesda PS Moment?

There's a darkly funny layer to all of this. Digital Foundry even made the joke themselves — this feels like a throwback to classic Bethesda on PlayStation. Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas ran so notoriously badly on PS3 that the community literally created mods turning those discs into in-game weapons.

History, it seems, has a sense of humor.

Final Thoughts

Starfield on PS5 is visually impressive and genuinely fun, but crashes this widespread at launch are a problem that Bethesda needs to patch fast. Here's hoping a fix arrives soon.
