Hey, Daily Quest readers.
Here's a fun one. Donkey Kong doesn't say a single word throughout the entirety of Donkey Kong Bananza, his latest adventure on Switch 2. You'd assume that's because, well, he's a monkey. Monkeys don't talk. Case closed, right?
Wrong. According to Bananza producer Kenta Motokura, DK can talk in this game — Nintendo just decided we didn't need to hear him.
DK Has A Voice In Motokura's Head
During an IGN interview following Bananza's GDC presentation last week, Motokura was asked an interesting question. Since Bananza was in development around the same time Seth Rogen voiced a fully speaking Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, did the team imagine their version of DK having a voice too?
Turns out, yes:
"I would say yes. In my head, Donkey Kong does talk. You come upon these choices in the game, and the player has the opportunity to see Donkey Kong's expression and how he might be feeling about those, and then the player can make their choice."
But there's a deliberate reason we never hear it:
"This is different from the Donkey Kong character that you see in the movie because the one that you see in the game, in a sense, is a double of the player, and so they don't speak, allowing the player to project a little bit more."
The Silent Protagonist Principle
So there you have it. DK's silence in Bananza follows the same logic as countless silent protagonists throughout gaming history — Link, Gordon Freeman, Claude from GTA III. The character doesn't speak because you are the character. Your choices, your expressions, your decisions. DK is a vessel for the player.
It's a well-established design philosophy, but it's somewhat surprising to see it applied to Donkey Kong specifically. Most of us assumed DK was silent because he's literally an ape. Having a fully voiced version in the movie has clearly muddied the waters, prompting fans to ask why he talks in one medium but not the other.
The answer? He could talk in the game. Nintendo just chose a different approach — one that prioritizes player connection over character voice.
More Bananza Secrets From GDC
The voice reveal is just one of several fascinating tidbits from Bananza's GDC week. The dev team also dropped some other interesting nuggets:
- Whatever game EPD makes next — likely a new 3D Mario — will probably include ideas born from Bananza's development
- The team refuses to clarify where Bananza falls on the Donkey Kong timeline (classic Nintendo)
Both of those details are intriguing in their own right. The idea that Bananza's innovations could feed into a future Mario game suggests Nintendo sees this title as more than just a spinoff — it's a testing ground.
Final Thoughts
The idea that DK has a voice we simply never hear is a surprisingly philosophical take from Nintendo. It reframes Bananza's silent protagonist not as a limitation, but as a deliberate design choice that deepens player immersion.
Also, I kind of love that somewhere in Kenta Motokura's head, Donkey Kong is having full conversations. I desperately want to know what he sounds like in there.
