Resident Evil Requiem Is The Highest Rated Original Game In The Series In Over 20 Years

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

The wait is almost over. After countless trailers, that Leon tease, and endless discussions about how gorgeous it'll look on Nintendo Switch 2, Resident Evil Requiem finally launches this Friday. It's the first new, non-remake entry in the iconic horror series in almost five years — and if the review scores are anything to go by, it absolutely lives up to the hype.

Requiem Is Scoring Big

Resident Evil Requiem currently sits at a 90 on OpenCritic and an impressive 88 on Metacritic. Those aren't just good scores — they're the highest an original Resident Evil game has achieved since 2005.

The last original entry to score higher was Resident Evil 4 with a legendary 96. Let's be real — no matter how good Requiem is, topping that was never realistic. But coming this close? That's a massive achievement for Capcom.

What Critics Are Saying

Here at TheGamer, Jade King awarded Requiem a 4/5, praising its ability to balance horror and action:

"It's reached a point where anxiety-inducing horror and over-the-top explosive action can exist in tandem rather than cannibalising one another into tragic irrelevance."

King notes that Requiem's survival horror gameplay represents a new peak for the series.

Over at Giant Bomb, Dan Ryckert gave it a 4.5/5 — just half a star less than he awarded Metroid Prime 4:

"Resident Evil Requiem is an excellent culmination of everything Capcom has learned during 30 years of making this franchise, and it serves as a tantalizing glimpse of what its future may hold."

Meanwhile, VGC's Dave Aubrey offered a slightly more reserved take, awarding it 4/5:

"Capcom has once again delivered a polished and beautiful Resident Evil game, it's just not quite amongst the best."

The Best Of Both Worlds

It's been clear for a while that Capcom went out on a limb with Requiem, trying to appeal to both sides of the Resident Evil fandom in one game.

  • Grace's gameplay caters to fans who love the survival horror tension of Resident Evil 2
  • Leon's gameplay delivers the action-packed monster-bashing that Resident Evil 4 sickos crave

It makes perfect sense that Capcom targeted these two entries specifically — both the originals and their respective remakes are widely considered the best Resident Evil games of all time. Based on review scores, it sounds like they absolutely nailed the balance.

Final Thoughts

Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be everything fans hoped for — a perfect blend of classic survival horror and explosive action. You've only got two days until you can play it yourself and see what all the hype is about.
