Super Mario Galaxy Movie SHIFTS to April 1

Hey, Daily Quest readers.

IT'S-A ME, HYPE OVERLOAD! Nintendo and Illumination just set the internet on fire with a special Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct on January 25, 2026. Not only did we get a massive new trailer, but Shigeru Miyamoto himself confirmed that the release date has been brought forward to April 1, 2026, in the US and major global markets!

Originally slated for April 3, this two-day bump means we’re getting the Luma-powered sequel even sooner. And don't worry—it’s not an April Fool's joke; it’s a global alignment strategy to get the world into theaters simultaneously.

The Trailer: Yoshi Finally Joins the Party!

After years of waiting since that post-credits egg teased us in 2023, Yoshi has finally hatched. The new footage shows Mario and Luigi discovering a timid, adorable Yoshi in a cave before the green dino evolves into a ride-or-die hero.

But Yoshi isn't the only "deep cut" joining the cast. The trailer confirmed a massive roster of characters that span Mario's entire history:

  • Birdo: Appears as a rival to Princess Peach, launching eggs in a high-stakes battle.

  • Mouser: The bomb-throwing boss from Super Mario Bros. 2 makes his big-screen debut.

  • Lakitu & Koopa Troopas: Seen in a chaotic chase sequence involving Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi.

  • Baby Mario & Baby Luigi: Flashback (or time-travel?) cameos that show the brothers in their cutest forms.

Production Update: Animation is 100% Finished

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri joined the Direct to confirm that animation is fully completed. The film has officially moved into post-production, where the focus is now on sound design and the epic orchestral score.

Composer Brian Tyler is back, leading a 70-piece orchestra to record the soundtrack. Expect to hear those sweeping, iconic themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games (yes, "Gusty Garden" fans, be ready) woven throughout the movie’s score.

A Multiverse of Kingdoms?

The trailer showed a surprising amount of variety beyond just outer space. We saw the brothers investigating a "troubled pipe" in what looks like the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey, complete with the Inverted Pyramid. We even got a glimpse of Luigi in his Frog Suit and a roaring T-Rex nod to the Cascade Kingdom!

Verdict: Can It Beat $1.36 Billion?

With the inclusion of fan-favorites like Yoshi and Rosalina, plus the "kingdom-hopping" energy of Odyssey, this sequel is tracking to be even bigger than the first. Nintendo is treating this as the "Main Event" of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary, and the hype levels are currently at an all-time high.
