Ryan Hurst Picks Up the Axe: Sons of Anarchy Star Cast as Kratos

The highly anticipated God of War live-action series at Prime Video has officially found its Ghost of Sparta. On January 14, 2026, Sony and Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Ryan Hurst will portray Kratos in the upcoming adaptation.

Hurst is famously known as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead, but he is already a legend in the God of War community for his BAFTA-winning performance as Thor in God of War Ragnarök. In a full-circle moment, Hurst will now lead the series he previously helped bring to life as a villain.

Casting and Production Details

  • The Lead: Ryan Hurst replaces the digital presence of Christopher Judge. Judge notably took to social media to congratulate Hurst, giving him the official "BOI" approval.

  • Teresa Palmer as Sif: Shortly after Hurst's announcement, reports from Deadline indicated that Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, Warm Bodies) has joined the cast as Sif, the Norse goddess and wife of Thor.

  • The Showrunner: Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) is steering the project, promising a faithful adaptation of the 2018 Norse saga.

  • Filming Location: Production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver, Canada, in March 2026.

What We Know About the Plot

The first season will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to follow the narrative of the 2018 game. It centers on Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they journey to the highest peak in the realms to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Moore has emphasized that while the "epic journey" and monster battles are present, the "emotional heart" of the father-son dynamic is the show's true focus.

"Used to play as him. Now I get to be him. Grateful to pick up the axe, and honored by the fans who made this story legendary." — Ryan Hurst via Instagram
