Bungie Fixes Bizarre "Marathon Virus" Bug That Auto-Installed Destiny 2

Pre-ordering Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, came with an unexpected "bonus" for Steam users this week: an unprompted 170 GB installation of Destiny 2.

The strange glitch, which many fans joked was a "Freudian slip" or a "desperate virus" to boost Destiny 2's population, has officially been patched. Here is the breakdown of what happened and the latest on the road to Marathon’s March launch.

The Pre-order "Installation" Bug

When pre-orders for Marathon went live on Steam earlier this week, thousands of players reported that as soon as their transaction was completed, Destiny 2 began downloading in the background.

Why did it happen?

Bungie confirmed the issue was a technical error on the server side, likely linked to the pre-order crossover rewards. Because buyers receive special cosmetics for Destiny 2 (like the "Waiting for Exfil" emote and Silkworm Weave shader), the Steam client incorrectly flagged the purchase as a Destiny 2 expansion, triggering the full game download.

Other Fixes in the Update:

  • Collector’s Edition Error: Resolved a bug where owners of the physical Collector’s Edition received an "invalid code" error when trying to activate their game on Steam.

  • Delivery Kiosk: Fixed an issue in Destiny 2 where pre-order rewards weren't appearing at the Special Deliveries terminal.

Marathon's All-Star Voice Cast Revealed

As part of the recent momentum, Bungie unveiled a "stacked" voice cast for the game. If you're a fan of recent RPG hits, you'll recognize several voices:

  • Ben Starr: (Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Clive in FFXVI)

  • Jennifer English: (Maelle in Expedition 33, Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3)

  • Roger Clark: (Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2)

  • Samantha Béart: (Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3)

  • Elias Toufexis: (Adam Jensen in Deus Ex)

Key Dates to Watch

With the March 5, 2026 release date set, Bungie is planning one final public push to win over skeptics.

  • Open Preview Weekend: Confirmed for mid-February 2026. This will be a free-to-play "Open Beta" weekend on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC with no pre-order required.

  • Launch Price: $39.99 for the Standard Edition.

Destiny 2: Shadows of Uncertainty?

While the Marathon hype is building, Destiny 2 players are feeling the sting of the spotlight shift. Reports continue to circulate that the "Shadow and Order" update, originally scheduled for March 3, has been delayed to avoid clashing with Marathon's launch. Bungie has yet to release a 2026 roadmap, leading to community anxiety that the 10-year-old franchise is taking a back seat.

Are you planning to jump into the Tau Ceti IV during the Open Preview, or is your hard drive still recovering from the accidental Destiny 2 download? Let us know!
