As of January 10, 2026, the dream of playing 2023’s Game of the Year on Nintendo’s newest hardware has hit a major roadblock. While the Nintendo Switch 2 certainly has the power to handle the game (especially given its recent success with Cyberpunk 2077 and Divinity: Original Sin 2), a "shaky relationship" between the developer and the IP owner is standing in the way.
"Wasn't Our Decision to Make"
During a Reddit AMA on January 9, 2026, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke was asked point-blank if Baldur's Gate 3 would ever see a Switch 2 release. His response was brief but telling:
"We would have loved to, but it wasn't our decision to make."
This comment essentially confirms that Larian is no longer in the driver's seat for Baldur's Gate content. Since Larian famously decided to move away from the Dungeons & Dragons IP to focus on their own franchise, Divinity, the rights to any future ports or sequels now sit entirely with Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast (WotC).
The NateTheHate Leak: A "Healthy" Relationship Problem
Prominent gaming insider NateTheHate added context to Vincke's statement, revealing that the relationship between Larian and Hasbro/WotC is currently "not healthy." Several factors likely contributed to this fallout:
The Layoffs: In late 2023 and 2024, Hasbro laid off nearly the entire team at Wizards of the Coast that Larian had worked with for years to bring BG3 to life. Vincke was vocally critical of these industry layoffs during his GDC acceptance speech.
Creative Differences: Larian cancelled early work on a Baldur's Gate 3 DLC and Baldur's Gate 4, citing a lack of passion for the project and a desire to own their own IP again.
The Licensing Gap: Because Larian is an independent studio, they would need a new contract and the "blessing" of Hasbro to begin a port. If the relationship is as strained as insiders suggest, neither side seems eager to return to the negotiating table.
Larian’s New Focus: Divinity
While Baldur's Gate 3 is unlikely, Larian is doubling down on Nintendo’s new console with their own IP:
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition: Surprised fans by launching as a day-one native title for the Switch 2 in December 2025, running at a stable 60 FPS.
The New "Divinity" Game: Announced at The Game Awards 2025, Larian's next massive project is being built with the Switch 2 in mind. Technical Director Bert van Semmertier confirmed in the same AMA that they "love the platform and will certainly consider it" for a day-and-date release.
What This Means for Switch 2 Owners
If you want to play a Larian RPG on your Switch 2 in 2026, you'll be playing Divinity. Unless Hasbro decides to hire a third-party porting house (like Saber Interactive or Iron Galaxy) to bring Baldur's Gate 3 to the console without Larian’s involvement, the game will remain absent from the Nintendo ecosystem.
Would you be willing to play a version of Baldur's Gate 3 ported by a different studio, or do you feel it wouldn't have that "Larian magic" without the original team behind the port?
