Nintendo Releases Switch and Switch 2 System Updates for December 2025

Firmware Version 21.1.0 Is Now Live

On December 8, Nintendo rolled out new system updates for both the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2. The update brings both consoles up to firmware version 21.1.0 and will automatically download for systems connected to the internet.

This release follows firmware version 21.0.1, which arrived two weeks earlier and focused on fixing specific issues. Those fixes included resolving repeated system transfer errors between Switch and Switch 2 consoles, as well as a Switch 2 Bluetooth bug that caused wireless controllers and audio devices to fail to reconnect after Sleep Mode or Airplane Mode. Nintendo also made additional stability improvements at the time, though details were not disclosed.

No New Features in the Latest Update

Players hoping for new features may be disappointed. According to Nintendo, firmware version 21.1.0 is a minor update focused solely on general system stability for both the Switch and Switch 2. No additional functionality or visible changes were listed, and Nintendo has not clarified which specific bugs or issues were addressed.

As with previous updates, users can also manually check for and install the update by navigating to System Settings from the Home Menu and selecting System Update.

Wrapping Up a Major Year for Nintendo

The update arrives near the end of a busy and successful year for Nintendo. 2025 marked the reveal and launch of the Switch 2, which introduced a larger display, redesigned Joy Con controllers, and a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor with DLSS support. The new console has already surpassed 10 million units sold worldwide as of late September.

In addition to exclusive titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 maintains backward compatibility with original Switch games. Several popular titles, including Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Super Mario Odyssey, received free updates that take advantage of the newer hardware. More Switch 2-specific enhancements may arrive in 2026.

Metroid Prime 4 and Looking Ahead

Nintendo also capped off the year with the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on both Switch and Switch 2. The long awaited title concluded an eight year development journey and launched with extra features on Switch 2, including support for 120 Hz gameplay on compatible displays and mouse controls using Joy Con 2.

With 2026 approaching, Nintendo shows no signs of slowing down. Upcoming releases such as Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave suggest continued strong support for both the Switch and Switch 2 in the year ahead.
