The biggest "secret" of the year is out! Following his appearance at The Game Awards 2025, fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy is not just making a cameo in Resident Evil Requiem; he's sharing the spotlight equally with new protagonist Grace Ashcroft.
Director Akifumi Nakanishi confirmed in a post-TGA interview that the game will feature an "almost equally split" 50/50 campaign between the two characters. This confirms that the return of Leon is a major structural element of the new title. The game will operate with one unified story, much like Resident Evil: Revelations, but switch perspectives between Leon and Grace as the plot advances.
Two Distinct Gameplay Styles
The reason for the dual-protagonist approach is to create a dynamic shift in tension, effectively giving players two different Resident Evil experiences within one story.
Grace Ashcroft: Survival Horror
Grace's sections will focus on the pure, intense horror aspects of the game, with Nakanishi describing her as "the biggest scaredy-cat in Resident Evil history". Her gameplay is said to be based on the style of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7, where evasion and managing scarce resources are key. These sections will provide the high-tension environment where players must cower and hide from terrifying enemies.
Leon S. Kennedy: Action Horror
Leon, by contrast, is a seasoned veteran and "isn't well suited to horror" because his character wouldn't realistically cower in fear. His chapters focus on intense, adrenaline-pumping action, providing a sense of "release" from Grace's segments. His gameplay is built on the foundation of Resident Evil 4, featuring martial arts, melee moves, and a strong sense of combat-oriented satisfaction.
Nakanishi likened the shift between the two gameplay styles to "jumping into a cold bath after sitting in a hot sauna," suggesting the contrast will be key to the game's unique rhythm and emotional toll. The developers also intentionally designed Leon to be an ikeoji (a cool, attractive older guy), ensuring his presentation delights longtime fans.
Are you excited for the 50/50 split, or would you have preferred a single protagonist for the entire game?
