New rumors suggest the Call of Duty game slated for 2026—widely believed to be Modern Warfare 4 and developed by Infinity Ward—will heavily reuse the controversial design philosophy of 2022's Modern Warfare 2. This news may disappoint longtime fans who criticized the 2022 title for its polarizing multiplayer experience.
Veteran Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope, who has a substantial track record of accurate leaks, took to Twitter to claim that Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer is "almost a complete copy of Modern Warfare 2" in its current development state.
A Return to Polarizing Mechanics
While Modern Warfare 2 enjoyed a strong launch with over $1 billion in sales within 10 days, it suffered from some of the weakest player retention among modern CoD titles, reportedly losing over half its PC player base after the first month. Many veterans attributed this drop-off to its core multiplayer design:
Slower Movement: Movement speed was criticized for being sluggish compared to other entries, which lowered the traditional skill ceiling and led to a meta where jump-shots became a competitive necessity.
Visibility Issues: Pronounced muzzle flash, visual recoil, and the removal of the red dot minimap for unsuppressed gunfire were all cited as reducing target visibility and fundamentally altering the game's pace.
High TTK (Time to Kill): The combination of short TTK and slow movement meant players often felt they died instantly without a chance to react.
The alleged Modern Warfare 4 will supposedly retain most of these features, with only two key changes: perks will no longer need to be charged up, and the ADS (Aim Down Sight) and slide penalties will be less harsh.
End of Last-Gen Consoles and the Switch 2
In other major news, TheGhostOfHope claimed that Modern Warfare 4 will finally be the title that drops support for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Both consoles are now over 12 years old, and the move would allow developers to focus entirely on current-gen hardware.
Additionally, the leaker referenced Microsoft's agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, hinting that the shooter will likely be released on the Switch 2 at some point.
With Modern Warfare 4 not expected to hit the market until late 2026, the potential for radical design changes remains slim, especially if Infinity Ward is committed to their current design vision.
Are you hoping Infinity Ward implements radical changes to the multiplayer before the 2026 release, or do you prefer the design foundation of Modern Warfare 2 ?
