Embark Studios is set to release the highly anticipated Cold Snap update for ARC Raiders this week, bringing a new map condition, fresh content, and a sought-after new in-game item: the Guitar.
The addition of the Guitar was revealed in a short teaser trailer. Similar to the existing Flute item, the Guitar is primarily for making music while Topside, but it may also serve as a tool for non-verbal communication, letting other Raiders know you mean no harm. Players are already speculating about playing the two instruments together for an "epic harmony." However, the teaser suggests that playing the Guitar may attract nearby ARC enemies, so caution is advised when using it in open areas.
The update is expected to go live on December 16.
Steady Player Base and New Content
Despite launching alongside major titles like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, ARC Raiders has achieved significant success, soaring to over 481,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch. The game continues to average around 300,000 concurrent players during peak hours, outperforming its competitors. This steady stream of new content, including the upcoming Cold Snap update, is likely a key factor in maintaining its active player base.
Cold Snap Update Details
The Cold Snap update is the game's second major content patch since its October release. Key additions include:
Snowfall Map Condition: This new condition will cover the map in snow, reducing visibility, making movement unsteady on frozen water, and posing a constant threat to Raiders who remain exposed outdoors for too long (risk of frostbite).
New Raider Deck: Bringing an array of cosmetic items to the game.
Expedition Project: The first departure window for this project will open.
New Outfit: A new skin featuring a thick coat, gloves, solar panels, a mask, cap, and eye visor will be added, designed to combat the new weather conditions, although it has already received mixed feedback from the community.
Community Concerns
While the new content is exciting, players are also urging Embark to include numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements in the update. The community has been plagued by various issues, including persistent map exploits that players have quickly discovered even after recent patches. Addressing these exploits is a high priority for players as the holiday season approaches.
