Team Cherry Opens Up About the Future of Hollow Knight After Silksong

Team Cherry has finally offered a glimpse into what could come after Hollow Knight: Silksong—and while the door isn’t closed on another Hollow Knight game, the studio has made one thing clear: any future entry wouldn’t be a traditional sequel.

Silksong’s Record-Breaking Launch Sets the Stage

After years of anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong launched on September 4, and the impact was immediate. The game was so highly anticipated that it managed to crash several major digital storefronts on release day. Within its first week, Silksong is estimated to have reached over 5 million players, with around 3 million Steam purchases alone, despite also releasing as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.

Its massive success has naturally reignited speculation about what Team Cherry might do next.

No “Silksong 2” — Future Games Would Stand Side by Side

In a new interview with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Team Cherry co-directors Ari Gibson and William Pellen reflected on Silksong’s reception, development history, and the studio’s creative philosophy.

When asked about the possibility of Hollow Knight 3, the pair were cautiously open—but Gibson emphasized one key point:

“If there were ever others, we would hope that they all follow that same pattern—that the series is all games that just exist alongside one another.”

In other words:
If another Hollow Knight game happens someday, it wouldn’t be a direct sequel to Silksong. Just as Silksong evolved from a planned DLC into its own standalone identity, any potential future title would follow a similar philosophy—connected in spirit, not in strict continuity.

From DLC to Independent Vision

Silksong’s origins date back to a DLC stretch goal from the original game's 2014 Kickstarter. But by its 2019 reveal, Team Cherry had already decided the idea was too big, too ambitious, and too deserving of its own identity.

That gamble paid off massively, strengthening the studio’s belief in creating standalone entries rather than conventional sequels.

DLC for Silksong Comes First

Before thinking about a third game, Team Cherry has already confirmed that Silksong will receive post-launch DLC, just as the original Hollow Knight did. Given the studio’s tiny size—still just three core developers—and its deliberate approach to craftsmanship, this DLC alone could take years.

Fans who endured the long “Silksanity” wait for Silksong’s release know this well: Team Cherry does not rush.

What Comes Next? A Long Wait, But Big Potential

The runaway success of Silksong has given the studio both the financial stability and creative freedom to take its time deciding what comes next. Whether that ends up being another Hollow Knight universe title—or something completely different—remains unknown.

But one thing is certain: if Team Cherry continues building games that “exist alongside one another,” the world of Hollow Knight may still have exciting new journeys ahead, even if they’re years away.

If you want, I can rewrite this in a more dramatic, more journalistic, or more minimalist style—just let me know!
