Borderlands 4 Breaks an Unfortunate Record on Steam

Just two months after its release, Borderlands 4 has hit an all-time low milestone — and not in the good way. According to Steam Charts, the game’s 24-hour peak player count on November 10, 2025, was just under 20,000. That’s only two days shy of its two-month anniversary, and while 20K might sound decent at first, it represents a dramatic fall from its launch numbers.

For many fans, this probably isn’t too surprising. Despite being packed with live-service elements meant to keep players engaged, Borderlands 4 hasn’t managed to hold onto its audience. What makes this drop particularly striking is how much sharper it is compared to previous Borderlands games.

Borderlands 4 Has Lost More Players Than Any Previous Entry

As of November 10, the game’s player base on Steam has fallen by a staggering 93% in just two months. By comparison, both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3 lost around 82% of their player bases in the same time frame. That means Borderlands 4 has shed over 10% more players than its predecessors — a record no developer wants to break.

Here’s how the numbers stack up:

  • Borderlands 4:

    • All-time peak – 304,398

    • Two-month peak – 19,804

    • Percent lost – 93%

  • Borderlands 3:

    • All-time peak – 93,820

    • Two-month peak – 17,256

    • Percent lost – 82%

  • Borderlands 2:

    • All-time peak – 124,678

    • Two-month peak – 22,554

    • Percent lost – 82%

While it’s important to note that Borderlands 4’s launch peak was significantly higher than its predecessors — naturally leading to a steeper decline — that doesn’t fully explain the drop-off. Many PC players have pointed to performance issues and technical bugs as reasons for leaving, especially on Steam.

Can Borderlands 4 Recover?

Of course, Steam stats only tell part of the story. Borderlands 4 is available across multiple platforms, so it’s possible console numbers look a bit healthier. Still, such a sharp decline is a clear sign that the community’s enthusiasm has cooled fast.

That could change soon, though. The game’s first major DLC, “How Rush Saved Mercenary Day,” is on the horizon, and it might bring some players back. If Gearbox can iron out the technical problems and deliver meaningful new content, Borderlands 4 could still bounce back — but for now, its Steam record paints a troubling picture of a looter-shooter that’s losing its grip.
